"Training
the Sport Horse" by Christopher Bartle

Shortly
before the Olympics in Sydney 2000, Christopher was asked by J.A.
Allen, Equestrian Book Publishers if he would write a short book
for them on training the Novice Dressage horse. But not satisfied
with writing such a limited book, Christopher said he would rather
write a book that encapsulated all that he has learnt over the years
from his trainers, from study of other trainers, riders and books
and from his experience in teaching riders and training horses over
the last 40 years.
His
system of training centres on the need for a partnership between
a horse and rider in which they share responsibilities. A clear
understanding of these responsibilities is the key to success. The
rider, the senior partner in the relationship, sets the goals and
communicates with the horse. The horse must learn to respond but
look after himself and not rely on the rider.
The
book covers all aspects of training, from "nursery school"
through to more advanced work, competition riding and problem solving.
The rider's initial role is to establish his own posture and balance,
and to learn to communicate with the horse through body language
and position, using the language of touch initially to educate and
then to support. There is an explanation of the horse's biomechanics
- how he carries and uses himself - so that a rider can understand
how to improve his horse's self-carriage and also how to recognise
his horse's strengths and weaknesses.
The preparation and execution of each of the basic training exercises,
and later more advanced dressage movements, is explained in detail
as too is their relationship to jumping. The jumping training deals
with both show jumpers and eventers, and gives exercises to improve
rider and horse. Developing an "eye for a stride", walking
and riding courses, and dealing mentally with competitions are some
of the many subjects covered.
The
innovative format of the book makes it easy to follow, allowing
the reader to pinpoint information quickly without wading through
pages of text. Over 100 photographs and diagrams have been used
to illustrate the author's comments and to enhance explanations.
This is an exceptionally comprehensive training manual, an invaluable
addition to any horseman's library.
